Mel’s Story

Mel has spent much of her life behind the scenes, quietly keeping everything running smoothly while remaining largely invisible. Calm, competent, and polished, she mastered the art of making life work for everyone else, often at the expense of not being seen herself. The invisibility that once fueled self-doubt became a quiet armour - a way to stay safe while still making things happen.

For years, she wore the mask of control and capability, of always having it together. Onlookers saw efficiency, strength, and reliability - but seldom the thoughtful, reflective, and deeply creative mind behind it. Underneath, Mel carried the fear that her quiet approach wasn’t enough, that her contributions were invisible, that her voice didn’t matter.

Through her journey, she discovered that what she once thought of as weaknesses - carefulness, thoughtfulness, and reflection - are actually sources of profound power. They allow her to connect deeply, think creatively, and make meaningful impact in life and business. Exhibition Synopsis

Mel spent years behind the scenes, invisible yet indispensable. Her quiet, thoughtful approach, once shadowed by self-doubt, is now her strength. True visibility, she discovered, comes not from perfection or volume, but from courage, integrity, and the bravery to show up fully as yourself.

I created this mask to show the version of me that reflected what I felt I had to be all the time and what it felt the world seemed to be more comfortable seeing from me - polished, reflective, always composed. The mirrored surface hides the cracks, reflecting everything around me, almost making me invisible, while revealing little of what’s within. The words capture the feelings that developed beneath the mask and I used gold to hint at what lies beneath the surface, the depth, honesty, and quiet strength that make the imperfections worth seeing.
